Anesthesia and Patient Monitoring
- Patient Monitoring – While your pet is under sedation or anesthesia, they are being continuously monitored by a Registered Veterinary Technician. RVTs are highly trained in anesthetic monitoring, and use a variety of different tools to help keep your pet’s anesthesia as safe as possible. Your pets heart rate, EKG, blood pressure, oxygenation, in-and-end tidal carbon dioxide, respiratory rate and temperature are continuously recorded and monitored in detail throughout the length of the procedure. Your pet has one on one monitoring post-operatively to ensure proper recovery from anesthetic medications, and ensure they are receiving adequate pain control.
- General Anesthesia – For most surgical procedures, your pet will need to be under a general anesthesia where they will be unconscious and not feel pain. All pets undergoing anesthesia at our hospital are placed on IV fluids for ease of administering medications, provide fluid support to maintain blood pressure and assist in a quicker recovery, as well as for added safety in case of complications. We tailor anesthetic medications for each patient, and follow specific anesthetic protocols including in depth patient monitoring to help ensure the safety of our patients.
- Local Anesthesia – For some minor surgical or diagnostic procedures, we will sometime utilize local anesthetics to help control pain. Local anesthetics cause a temporary loss of sensation in the area administered. Local anesthetics are often used in conjunction with a sedative and/or anti-anxiety medication to keep pets calm during a procedure.
